The body became programmable: what that does to the value of physical work.

When the body that performs the physical task becomes programmable, manual labor starts behaving more like software than like manpower.

Throughout economic history, physical work had one characteristic that defined everything around it: it was scarce. There was a limited number of hands, and those hands got tired, got sick, slept and charged by the hour. The entire organization of work, wages, shifts, logistics, the geography of factories, was built on top of that scarcity. AI-driven humanoids put that premise in check for the first time.

When the body that performs the physical task becomes programmable, manual labor starts behaving more like software than like manpower.

It scales, it replicates, it operates without stopping and it improves with every update of the AI model that commands it. This is not just more automation, it is a change in the economic nature of physical work itself. What used to be the most rigid input of the operation starts gaining the elasticity that only the digital had.

It is important not to exaggerate the calendar. This does not happen overnight, and most physical tasks will still depend on people for a good while. But the direction is clear, and direction matters more than date when it comes to strategy. Whoever sees the curve early positions themselves before it becomes obvious to everyone.

The point that interests me is the displacement of value. If the body becomes a programmable commodity, what stays rare and valuable is something else: the intelligence that decides what the body does, and the human judgment about where and why to use that capability. Repeating physical effort stops being a competitive differentiator, because anyone will be able to buy that capability. The differentiator migrates to orchestrating, deciding and being accountable. Again, the AI that decides at the center, and the body as executor.

There is also an interesting geographic consequence. Much of the global economy was organized around where physical work was cheapest. When the body becomes programmable and intelligence becomes the scarce asset, that logic shifts. The advantage stops being where the cheapest hands are and becomes who controls the intelligence and the energy that move those hands. It is a reorganization that can redesign entire production chains.

And you cannot talk about this without facing the human cost head on. Physical work is not just a cost on a spreadsheet, it is the livelihood of millions of people and a source of dignity and identity. Treating the programmability of the body merely as a productivity gain, ignoring those who depend on that work, would be a poor and dangerous reading. The mature question is not how do I replace people faster, it is what society does with the physical effort technology frees up, and how that transition is conducted responsibly.

I see here one of the deepest displacements AI will cause, and one of the least discussed. We talk a lot about the AI that writes and decides, and little about the AI that lifts, carries and assembles. But it is the second one that will move the material structure of the economy, the factory floor, logistics, what it means to produce. And it has already left the lab.
