The Need

As digital music consumption accelerated across Latin America, users expected fast, intuitive, and visually engaging web experiences that could scale to millions of listeners. For leading platforms, the challenge was not only to offer access to vast music catalogs, but to present them through interfaces that enabled effortless discovery, playback, and engagement in a highly competitive market.

 

For Sonora, the largest music application in the region, there was a critical need to establish a strong, scalable web interface capable of supporting rapid growth while maintaining usability, performance, and brand consistency. The web experience needed to translate complex functionality into clear interactions, ensuring that users could navigate, explore, and consume content with minimal friction.

 

Addressing this need required defining a cohesive UI and interaction approach for the web that balanced aesthetics with usability at scale. Successfully meeting this challenge positioned Sonora for sustained growth and directly contributed to its acquisition by Rhapsody-Napster in October 2013, reinforcing the strategic value of design-led product experiences.

My Role and Key Results

My responsibilities:

Led product and design strategy for Sonora’s web platform, aligning rapid user growth, performance requirements, and brand consistency at scale.

Defined the end-to-end UI, UX, and interaction design for the web experience, translating complex music functionality into intuitive, high-performance user flows.

Established a cohesive visual and interaction language for web, balancing aesthetics, usability, and scalability in a highly competitive market.

Drove stakeholder alignment and design validation, ensuring business objectives, user needs, and technical constraints were consistently addressed.

Worked closely with engineering teams to ensure design feasibility, performance optimization, and scalable implementation across high-traffic web environments.

Results Achieved:

• Delivered a scalable, high-performance web interface, enabling fast, intuitive music discovery and playback at scale.

• Established a cohesive UI and interaction model for the web, balancing visual appeal, usability, and performance in a highly competitive market.
