The Need

As social platforms became central to everyday digital expression, users increasingly sought richer ways to capture and share memorable moments. Photos dominated social feeds, but they remained largely visual and static, lacking the emotional depth that music naturally provides. There was a clear gap between how people remember moments and how those moments were represented in social networks.

For Sonora, the largest music application in Latin America at the time, this created an opportunity to bridge visual memory and sound within Facebook. Users needed the ability to attach music to photo posts in the Facebook feed, transforming simple image uploads into emotionally expressive stories enhanced by soundtracks that reflected personal memories and feelings.

This need introduced a significant design and technical challenge. The application had to operate within Facebook’s ecosystem, respecting its APIs, permissions, feed behavior, and performance constraints, while delivering a seamless and intuitive experience. Adding music to photo records required careful interaction design to ensure simplicity, avoid friction, and feel native to the Facebook feed, not like an external add-on.

The core need, therefore, was to create a social music experience that allowed users to enrich their photo posts with sound, increasing emotional engagement, shareability, and time spent in the feed. Successfully addressing this challenge strengthened Sonora’s position as an innovator in social music experiences and contributed directly to its acquisition by Rhapsody-Napster in October 2013.

My Role and Key Results

My responsibilities:

Led product and design strategy for Sonora’s social music integration with Facebook, defining how music could be embedded natively into photo-sharing experiences.

Designed the end-to-end user experience, UI, and interaction model for attaching music to social content while respecting Facebook’s API, feed behavior, and performance constraints.

Defined a seamless, feed-native interaction paradigm that made music-enhanced posts feel intuitive, lightweight, and emotionally expressive rather than an external add-on.

Drove stakeholder alignment across product, design, and engineering, ensuring business objectives, user value, and platform limitations were consistently balanced.

Acted as design and product lead, validating concepts through iteration and ensuring scalability, usability, and native integration within Facebook’s ecosystem.

Results Achieved:

• Delivered a native Facebook-integrated social music experience, enabling users to enrich photo posts with sound in a seamless, feed-native way.

• Transformed static photo sharing into emotionally expressive stories, increasing engagement, shareability, and time spent in the Facebook feed.

• Established a simple and intuitive interaction model for attaching music to visual content, respecting Facebook’s API, performance, and UX constraints.

• Connected thousands of users through music-enhanced social moments, reinforcing Sonora’s position as an innovator in social music experiences.

• Contributed directly to Sonora’s acquisition by Rhapsody–Napster (October 2013), validating the strategic value of integrating music, emotion, and social interaction.
